Kansas is a long way from California—in so many ways. The plane touches down and I walk down the gangway. A wave of dry heat hits me in the face. No ocean breeze here for sure.

An hour later, I’m walking into the small lawyer’s office in the middle of nowhere. “I’m Maddy Winter, I’m here about my great-great aunt’s will.”

“Come on in, dear. Mr. Cahill will see you now.”

I’m pretty sure I’ve stepped back in time by four decades at least. Mr. Cahill’s hair is just one of the things from the sixties. The office could be a movie set.

The man looks up, lifts his finger from the thick book he was scanning. “Have a seat, young lady. I hear congratulations are in order.”

I hold up my ring hand. “Yep.”

“You have the marriage certificate?”

I shuffle my papers around, pull out the fresh county document. “Yes, sir.”

He slides on his reading glasses, “good, this is good. Now for the deed. We have to file a new deed with you and your husband’s name on it.”

I’m a little startled. My heart starts to pound in my ears. “My husband? I hope he doesn’t have to be here.”

“We’ll have to get him to sign something and fax it in.”

“We can do that.” At least I pray I can get him to. He’s come this far with me. I hope he’ll help me take this all the way to home plate.

“I’ll get everything drawn up. You get me his fax number and I’ll take care of the rest. The document should be ready in an hour.”

Apparently the secretary hears him and she comes to escort me out, “there’s a lovely diner just down the block if you want to have some lunch while we get the deed together.”

I thank her and walk out into the harsh sunlight. Christian’s phone rings a few times before he answers.

“Hey, I didn’t expect to hear from you so soon. Everything okay?”

“I’m in Kansas, if that’s what you mean. I have a little problem, I need your signature.”

He laughs for a second. “What now, Maddy?”

“You’re about to be on the deed of a farm in Marshall, Kansas.”

“Great. What I’ve always wanted.”

I breathe a little sigh—he didn’t say no. “Can I get your fax number? This is about to happen, within the hour.”

He rattles off the digits and wishes me luck.

“Thanks a million, Christian.”

“Whatever. Stay safe.” He says and disconnects.

I bet he regrets the day he walked into my shop.

An hour later, I’m walking from Mr. Cahill’s office to the courthouse with the secretary as my escort. She’s familiar with the workings of the county and agreed to help make sure everything is done right.

It’s a quick thing. Before I blink, I’m on a property deed with my husband, Christian Blaine Archer. Boy has life changed in just a few days.

My next appointment goes almost as quickly. The real estate agent already had all the details on the property and has the buyer’s agent saved in her phone contacts.

She smiles as she collects the signed documents from me.
